About Robert A. Filback
Rob Filback, PhD is professor of clinical education and chair of the Master of Arts in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (MAT—TESOL) program at USC Rossier School of Education. His areas of focus include international education, language teacher preparation, online and technology enhanced learning and creativity and innovation in education. He teaches courses at the masters and doctoral levels and regularly chairs dissertations.
He holds a PhD in International and Intercultural Education from USC where his dissertation on transformative learning and community organizing received nomination for Best Dissertation Award in the School of Education. He also received his master’s degree in TESOL from USC where he worked with Stephen Krashen, PhD and the late David Eskey, PhD. He earned his BS in Chemistry with a minor in Religion from George Fox University.
Rob is the founder of Avocet Education Partners, LLC. He founded Avocet to leverage over a decade of experience in online higher ed and to help other colleges and universities make smooth and effective transitions into high quality online programming. Based on his work as a university faculty member, chair of online and blended programs, and lead on multiple online and blended academic program developments, Rob brings deep experience in the online higher education space, including innovative approaches and both in-house online program developments and developments carried out in partnership with outside partners. Rob is an active researcher, regularly publishing in the area of online learning and program design and supervising doctoral students carrying out research in this area. He is frequently sought out to speak and consult on online learning by institutions in and outside of higher education.
